Knitting School. Creative machine knitting courses & information

Well, here’s the first blog for my Knitting School!
Watch out for the website http://knittingschool.co.uk/ which will be live soon. In the mean time, look here for all the information regarding workshop dates & times.

Here’s a brief outline of what the courses will be about:-

Creative design: machine knitting workshops
Here at ‘Knitting School’ we provide intensive & professional courses in machine knitting aimed at designers, design students, & creative individuals.

The courses are held in a professional studio environment where Claire herself works as a knitwear designer for the industry, selling designs to companies such as Moschino, Kaliko & River Island. You will be learning in this environment where you will be able to breathe in the creativity & be in the thick of what it is like to be in a designer in a knitwear studio.

Small groups, with a maximum of 4 students will be taught at any one time, ensuring lots of one to one contact time with Claire throughout the course. This allows for faster & more in depth learning outcomes for each student.

The courses are aimed at design undergraduates, professional designers & teachers who want to enhance their machine knitting skills (but all creatives who want to learn a new skill are welcome- we start from the complete basics to more advanced levels).

Pick the course that suits you:-

Complete Basics
This course is aimed at students who have never used a knitting machine before. You will be taught how to set up the machine ready for knitting, learn how to cast on, learn all the basic knitting structures from stripes, tuck stitches, Fair Isle patterning, slip stitches & weaving effects.
A knitting file with course notes will be started building up to a useful file of knitted structures which you will take home with you for future reference or a folder you can add your own notes to later.

All equipment & yarn for the course will be provided.

Intermediate Creative Machine Knitting Course
This course follows on from the beginner’s course above but individuals & designers who want to brush up on their creative skills will also be very welcome. Some knowledge of knitting on a machine will be required.
The course will cover more in depth knitted stitch structures, designing your own fabrics by putting designs into repeat, making your own punch cards & knitting your own designs on the machine. Some simple welts & rib structures will also be taught, utilising the ribber.
A knitting file with course notes will be started building up to a useful compilation of knitted structures which you will be able to take home with you for future reference, you can also add your own notes later.

All equipment & yarn for the course will be provided.

Advanced Creative Machine Knitting Course
Designed to follow on from the intermediate course but creative individuals or for designers who want to advance & stretch their knitting skills creatively, then the advanced creative machine knitting course covers creative 3D knitted structures. This course also covers more in depth use of the ribber as a creative & decorative tool & some garment construction will be achieved. Further designing & pattern repeat design will also be pushed further ie designing with colour & more decorative yarns. Washing & finishing & the use of different types of yarn in your design.
A knitting file with course notes will be started, building up a useful compilation of advanced knitted structures which you will be able to take home with you for future reference, you can also make your own notes later.

All equipment & yarn for the course will be provided.

Future courses later in the year will be designed around using industrial hand flats- Dubied & Stoll ‘V’ beds, which will cover writing specs for the knitwear industry, allowing the student to be more conversant with the industry as a whole.

Course Dates & Times
All courses will last for a duration of 4 weeks 10am-4pm weekdays, starting Thursday 16th February 2012, or can be split into evening sessions if you prefer. Weekend courses will be more intensive hours to cover all the subjects. Accomodation information will be provided on request.
